I'm an idiot. I posted the last message about "Cameo" thinking it was a reprint--fewer markets accept crime type reprints than accept SFFH reprints. It's not a reprint, so I DO have other markets open to me. I think I got confused because "God of Light" IS a reprint.
Sent "Cameo" off to Glimmertrain. I doubt it'll pass--I think the one thing that makes the story good also makes editors hesitant to accept it, but we'll see. It would certainly be nice on the credits list!
I've also applied for guest status at this year's Dragon*Con. I'm hoping the senior editor position at LP will give me the boost I need to make it, but, again, not holding my breath.
Why does it always take me to 12:30 or so to get to my editing? I have it scheduled to start at 11, but I never seem to make it. Always something else demanding attention. :P

Uploaded some of this year's crop of D*Con pictures. I let hub have the cameras and take all the pictures this time around. I still have some cameras to be developed from LAST year. Yes, I am lame. Besides, it was his first year and we only were able to pick up 2 cameras. However, both cameras from this year are developed already. I'll upload more later--I need hub's help on who some of the people are on the other roll. :P
And reposting a little note buried in my last stats post: did anyone else notice that the t-shirts sold at Dragon*Con this year said 2008 on them? The green ones. At least that's what they gave us when we asked for this year's t's. Just bizarre. We'll have to purchase the man a t-shirt for this year from the website, assuming they HAVE any left in a size he can wear (they don't sell a size I can wear so I just buy the alternate t's from that the non-con place and those had NO date on them). Just...odd.

Dragon*Con is almost here and we're going to have noooooooooooo money. We wanted to get a couple of autographs to complete my son's SG-1 poster (unfortunately, RDA won't be there, so we'll have to make do with everyone except him) and that will be anywhere from $25 to $30. It irritates me that actors, who already make a fortune, have to charge for their damn autographs, while authors, who generally make no where NEAR what an actor does, rarely do. Not saying that authors should charge, but, really, if anything it should be the other way around.
Anyway, so, autographs--we need to come up with about $100 for that. Then we'll want the t-shirts for this year, and that will be at least $70. Then there's parking, since we're driving down each day from the house (which is maybe 20 or 30 minutes away). Food, we can take with us. The plan was already to not buy much of anything, but now the plan will have to be to buy NOTHING. This works for me--I spent most of my time in panels last year anyway, but I'm not sure how well this will work for the hub with it being his first time there. Hopefully he'll find enough panels to keep him busy.
Things can change, but I'm not holding my breath...not with rent due and no money set aside for that either. And being overdrawn right now.
*sighs sadly*

Following
meiran's example, I'm trying to get an idea of who's going to Dragon*Con this year, particularly those from DII. We'd like to have a DII lunch with present and past members all invited, but I need an idea of who will there and when anyone's interested in meeting. The where's can be worked out later. I'm also interested in meeting anyone on my f-list with plans for being there, but we'll have to arrange other times. ;)
So, drop me a comment if you plan to be there, let me know what days, what day you're interested in lunch if you're among the DII group, and so on. We'll see what we can work out. Last year, the Writer's Track wasn't really set or announced until pretty close to the con, so we may have to play it by ear to get the lunch plans worked out.

My application as a Dragon*Con guest has been declined, No reasons given, but I suspect I don't have enough or the right kind of publication credits.
Good thing we bought the tickets already.
Okay, back to bed with me. Head is going to explode. *sighs*

So, the guest apps are now available for 2007. Saxy and I already paid for our membership, but I wasn't sure how the whole guest thing worked and wanted to make sure he and I had memberships before the prices went up. Now I could have sworn there was some sort of publication requirement for those going on the Writing Track, but I don't see it listed anywhere. Presumably I qualify even though my pubs don't include any books. (If anyone has any info on this, I would appreciate knowing what the requirements are.)
I just hope there isn't a separate app for Writing Track participation.
Anyways, going to work on the app and do some thinking about the whole thing. This will be my first con as a guest, so I'm not sure what to do or expect, but people seem to think I have something to say/give, so we'll see how that works out. I probably won't submit until I'm back from Hawaii.
Also a brief thank you to the few, the proud, the ones who have commented and told me about themselves in the previous post. If you friended me, please consider reading and responding. It's very interesting, and very cool. Some neat responses so far! :)
Tomorrow is crunch time. Need to get that last crit up, need to finish up things around the house, not sure when I'll be back on the LJ.

We used a little of my forthcoming final check to pay for Dragon*con tickets before they get too expensive for the two of us to go. We've had teenager block off the 4 days so she can be here watching the kids while Saxy and I are gone those days.
I'll need to ask
greenfaile about the train and parking and stuff that we used when she was out for the con last year, so Saxy and I can make plans to utilize the same process.
When my check comes in, it all goes into the car fund that the $100 for the tickets came out of. It's probably going to be our last splurge in awhile, and probably the only time we really get to go out "alone" for any time soon (in this case, alone being without the kids since we'll be around thousands of other people). We'll also have to start a "Dracon*con fund" for food and whatnot.
So, uh, yea, Dragon*con. Anyone looking for me, i
P.S. The crankiness is courtesy of more nonsense via the "brother". This is why this will be the last splurge for awhile. We need to get that jerk out of our lives ASAP.

Dragon*Com ends today, but I'm already done. The lady that was my ride just wasn't up to it today, and while there was one panel I really wanted to see and the Man offered to take me, I was just too wiped out. I only just got out of bed and I still want to sleep. (Yes, DII'ers, I DO sleep!) I ache all over. Really. Lots of walking. Lots of fast food. Lots of sitting in discomfort. And lots of fun.
I need to type out my notes and get the cameras developed, but I'll eventually be posting my notes and pics from the Writer's and SFLit tracks -- and probably a few costume things. Overall, good. The best panel was the 'Fightin and Writin' one -- they stayed the most on topic and gave the most concrete advice, but most the others were pretty good too.
But today I need to clear up the desk and do a little writing -- especially since The DII Writing Challenge started on September 1. And getting more sleep. I work tomorrow, so I need to recover and don't have a whole heck of a lot of time to do so.

I spent almost a full day's pay to go to Dragon*Con starting tomorrow. I did it with the encouragement of my husband and the promise of a ride from someone else who is going. It is 9:30 PM and, at this point, I have no pick up time. In fact, other than a brief exchange of cell phone numbers and the quick passing of ideas on a night for the Man to join us for dinner, I've had no contact with my ride since the weekend. I try to call and get the voice mail, except for once when someone picked up but no one talked to me -- plenty of talking to each other, but not a single hello. I've left 3 messages on the voice mail at this point.
Tomorrow I absolutely MUST go to the bank, so the earliest I can leave is 9:30 AM. As far as I can tell, nothing starts at Dragon*Con until 1:00 PM and the Opening Ceremony isn't until 6:30 PM, but a morning show will be there at 7:00 AM. (After seeing morning traffic, leaving before 10:00 or 10:30 would probably be insane, but that's just my thoughts, really.) I have NO IDEA what my ride is planning and can't really make plans myself as a result. If I miss them because my family needs money, there's absolutely nothing I can do about it. Thing is, we MIGHT be able to work around things if someone would freaking call me. As it stands, I can't even have the Man drive me down without a guarantee of a ride back.
Which means I might have just wasted a day's pay on this thing.
While I realize we still have time, I'm a little upset that there has been total silence. While I'll take ANY contact over NO contact, too much later falls into the being rude category -- I have kids in bed, ya know? But right now what I have is silence, no info, not even a phone message to give me a clue what the hell is going on. Someone made a promise, and now I have no idea if they're going to follow through. I hate that.
But I've been told I'm overly responsible. Not sure how that can be, but there you go.

Now editing to add: thank god for computer. We're on IM and now I feel REALLY stupid. :P

Hubby says they charge for autograph signings. Is this true? If so, about how much?
Anyone know?
And what should go in my "con bag" other than things to sign? Other than comfortable clothing and shoes, what else should I keep in mind?
Oh! And is there an LJ for the Writers' Track anywhere? They don't seem to have a site with any info on their events/schedule. :(
Nope, never been to a con before (at least not one of this nature) . . . why do you ask?

Going to this . . . and will get to meet at least one fellow DII member!
Really, I wasn't going to go, it's pricey and we REALLY can't afford it, but the man says he thinks we can make it up and told me to go. I know he'd like to go too, but 2 memberships are impossible for us, and he knew I really wanted to go and wanted to meet this fellow DII-er. So not only is he being sweet to practically order me to get my ticket/membership, he was willing to give up the opportunity for himself and still not holding me back.
The other DII-er and I will likely spend most our time in the writer's track: "Programming in the Writers Track will cover wide-ranging topics for both beginning and experienced writers, from basic submission procedures, to character development and world building, to plotting and pacing."
But they also have other areas of interest including Science Fiction Classics, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Literature, Tolkien's Middle Earth, and a Young Adult Literature track. And that doesn't count the Anime and Gaming.
For more info, go to . . .
Dragon*Con
Full con memberships are currently $70. They go up to $85 on the 14th. They also have memberships at the door by the day or multple day packages.
I wouldn't mind meeting a few LJer's there. ;)
